Evidence-Informed Practice

Understanding the science: how it works

01

Synaptic Modulation

Specialist medical infusions are understood to act on the brain's NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors — a mechanism researchers associate with supporting the repair of neural connections affected by chronic stress or depression.

02

A Different Timeline

Some patients report a shift in mood more quickly than is typical with conventional oral medication. Responses vary considerably from person to person, and a benefit cannot be guaranteed.

03

The Plasticity Window

In the period following an infusion, the brain is thought to enter a more adaptable, neuroplastic state. Where clinically appropriate, we use this window to integrate psychological therapies such as EMDR or psychotherapy.

This describes how infusion therapy is currently understood to work. It is a treatment rather than a cure, is not suitable for everyone, and any treatment plan is agreed only after an individual clinical assessment.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is specialist IV infusion therapy?

It is a medically supervised intravenous treatment used by specialists for certain complex or treatment-resistant mental health conditions. It is delivered under the care of a consultant psychiatrist, with the specific approach and medication decided on an individual basis following a full clinical assessment.

Who might it be suitable for?

It is typically considered for adults with treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, severe anxiety disorders or OCD, usually where other treatments have not provided sufficient relief. It is not appropriate for everyone. Whether it is right for you is determined individually during your psychiatric assessment.

Is it safe, and how am I monitored?

Treatment is given at sub-anaesthetic doses in a controlled clinical setting, with continuous physiological monitoring by medical staff throughout your session. Your prior assessment is an important safety step, allowing us to check suitability and identify anything that would make treatment inadvisable.

What might I experience during a session?

Experiences vary. Some people notice temporary changes in perception or a dissociative, dream-like feeling during the infusion, and occasionally mild nausea or short-lived changes in blood pressure or heart rate. You are monitored throughout, and these effects typically settle by the end of the session.

Will I be able to drive or work afterwards?

No. You should arrange for someone to accompany you home, and you should not drive, operate machinery, or make important decisions for the rest of the day. We'll talk you through this before your appointment.

How many sessions will I need?

Where treatment is appropriate, an induction course is often around six sessions, tailored to you, with a maintenance plan afterwards where clinically indicated. Your exact plan is agreed with Dr. Saal at assessment rather than fixed in advance.

Does it work, and is it a cure?

It is a treatment rather than a cure. Clinical experience and research suggest some people benefit meaningfully, but responses vary from person to person and a benefit cannot be guaranteed. It is most effective as part of a wider plan, often combined with psychological therapy and your existing care.

How do I get started?

The first step is a complimentary 15-minute suitability call. If it looks appropriate, we'll arrange a psychiatric assessment with Dr. Saal. You can book your consultation here or contact our team directly.
